Housing Works Bookstore Café celebrates their 10th Anniversary
Housing Works Bookstore Café is a unique destination in both retail and social entrepreneurship. A beautiful space in a historic downtown NYC building with high ceilings and mahogany-paneled bookshelves, the bookstore opened its doors in 1998. Since then, everyone from SoHo shoppers to Housing Works’ clients to world-famous literati climb classic spiral staircases to browse for books, then curl up in comfy chairs with coffee and a homemade cookie. The best part? Every dollar from every customer goes to support Housing Works’ mission to end homelessness and AIDS.

L3C or "low-profit, limited liability company" is a new form of limited liability company which combines the best features of a for-profit LLC with the socially beneficial aspects of a nonprofit. As of May 1, 2008 the L3C is available for use anywhere that LLC’s are recognized. 3. Help Create a Chronology of the Social Enterprise Industry The social enterprise industry is rapidly evolving and The Institute for Social Entrepreneurs, a member of SEA, has just released a first draft of the industry’s history entitled “Evolution of the social enterprise industry: A chronology of key events.” The chronology is an attempt to collect in one place the key events from the past 30 years that have helped shape the industry thus far. It is not meant to be a chronology of social enterprises themselves but rather to begin identifying important events in the surrounding eco-system that have led to the emergence of an industry replete with investors, academics, consultants, media watchdogs and others. Numerous people throughout the industry have contributed to the first draft, but The Institute needs additional help preparing an expanded version for publication this summer. Please email the following to institute@orbis.net: Photos and/or images you would like to see included in the chronology; information about missing events; and corrections to the first draft (including more detailed annotations). The deadline for submission is June 1. A revised chronology will be posted on the SEA Website July 1 and updated annually.
